Public record: A record we cannot quietly rewrite.

A public list of every document completed here. It lets anyone check that no signed document has been changed or removed afterwards, not even by us.

What this is, in four answers

What is this?
A public list with one line for every document completed here. Lines are only ever added, never changed or taken away.
Why does it exist?
So the record of a signed document cannot be quietly rewritten later, by anyone, us included. You never have to take our word for it.
Is anything private on it?
No. Each line is a fingerprint: a code worked out from the file. It shows nothing about what a document says or who signed it.
Do I need to do anything?
No. Every document you finish is added for you. If you want to hold us to it, save the latest code. That is all it takes.

Change one line and the code changes

The whole idea, small enough to try: eight pretend documents, folded into one code the way the real record folds every document.

  1. 1

    Each document gets a fingerprint

A short code worked out from the file. Change the file even slightly and its fingerprint changes completely.

  2. 2

The fingerprints fold into one code

Pairs are combined, then pairs of those, until a single code is left. That code is the one we publish each night.

  3. 3

So any change shows at the top

Change one document and every code above it changes, right up to the published one.

Every notice, kept for good

Each one stays valid forever. Copy any of them and ask us to prove today's list still begins with it.
